The Eaglescrag Kennels

Clodagh mated to Eaglescrag Kestrel, a son of Fintan out of Thornwick Rossan of Eaglescrag, produced Sp. & Port. Ch. Eaglescrag Liam. Before being exported, Liam was mated to Kelt and from the litter came Jessica who, mated to Yankee, produced Eaglescrag Craigie, the sire of Ch. Marumac Charlock, and Ch. Eaglescrag Celeste who went BIS at her first show, an Irish Wolfhound Club Open Show. Celeste seemed to Ruth and Leslie to be all they had hoped for, having a wonderful nature as well as being what Ruth considered one of the best of the Eaglescrag hounds.

Out of the Kestrel - Clodagh mating also came Eaglescrag Lysander, who went to Dagmar Kenis's Solstrand kennel, and became a champion and a notable sire, his progeny including Ch. Laird of Solstrand, Ch. Kellybourne Ice Rocket, Eng. & Ir. Ch. Gulliagh Galleon, Ch. Marumac Bahbarella, and Ch. Clonara Cassnu.

Celeste was mated to Solstrand Kaspar (by Ch. Marumac Charlock out of Ch. Kellybourne Ice Rocket - Charlock was by Eaglescrag Craigie and Ice Rocket by Eaglescrag Lysander), which produced Ch. Eaglescrag Iceflo. Celeste's littersister, Cariad, was mated to Ch. Marumac Cedric of Telgar (a son of Ch. Marumac Bahbarella) and from this litter came Ch. Eaglescrag Harvester. Cariad went on to produce a litter to Clonara Nizam (a son of Ch. Clonara Cassnu) from which came Chs. Eaglescrag Jake and Justin.

Iceflo was mated to Ch. Telgar Hadlee and produced Ch. Eaglescrag Kapitan, who won the Hound Group at the South Wales championship show in 1993 and 1994, also taking BIS in 1994. Kilfenora, a bitch from the Hadlee/Iceflo litter was also retained.

Besides Eaglescrag Kate (Yankee's dam), other Eaglescrag hounds have been exported and have been the foundation stock for now well-known kennels such as the Fitzarran kennels of Mr. & Mrs. William Deemer in the U.S.A., the McEvoy's Tirowen kennel in Australia, the von der Oelmuhle kennel of Messrs. Papenfuss and Rosner in Germany, and Mrs. Jansen's kennel in Sweden. Eaglescrag hounds have on two occasions been winners of American Specialties, and Eaglescrag Morvagh won BIS at a World Show.

Ruth first judged in the early 60s and gave CCs for the first time at Blackpool in 1967.

She also became a championship show judge of Scottish Deerhounds. She judged wolfhounds several times in other countries, including twice officiating at the American Specialty. She started on the Committee of the Irish Wolfhound Club in 1966, became Chairman, then Vice President and then President, a position she held until her death. She was also one of the small group (the others were Alan and Molly Hyett and Audrey Hegarty), which set up the Irish Wolfhound Rescue Trust in 1967.

Ruth wrote two articles on the care and feeding of Irish Wolfhounds for the Irish Wolfhound Club Year Book, which can be seen on the next page. Also on the next page is an article on Ruth's memories and observations over the years, which was published in the Irish Wolfhound Magazine, Spring 1989.

Sadly, Leslie died in 2001 and Ruth moved from Pennar Fach Farm to Shropshire. She had just one hound, Patsy, as companion at the end of her life - she died August 1st, 2004 - but the Eaglescrag name lives on, having had such a marked effect on the breed in so many areas of the world.
